Help me give my students hands-on experiences with nature. This will allow them to understand tested concepts while also fostering a love for science, and the world around them.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach an intelligent group of low-income title I students. They come from a number of different backgrounds and converge everyday in my classroom to give their best. This will be my second year teaching 5th grade science, and I quickly realized that my gems are eager to show what they know. The only things that they lack are background knowledge and experience. My goal is to bolster both of those this year.
My students are full of heart.
Prior to entering my class, science was taught sparingly to create more time for math and reading. Our campus has no school garden, and my students have attended at most ONE science related field trip a year. It is imperative that I find any and every way to make up for lost time this year.
My Project
Science is an experience! Too often however, I am unable to give my students real world, hands-on practice with the concepts I teach. This year I aim to change that, starting with our butterfly project. My students will be tested on the life cycles of animals such as butterflies and both flowering as well as, non-flowering plants by the State of Florida. I need your help to create meaningful experiences with these concepts in person instead of just through text. I added magnetic representations to display in my classroom and a model of the solar system because I will need to foster knowledge of the planets as I know it.
Lets ignite their spark for learning together!
I humbly solicit your help in purchasing a butterfly habitat, eggs, plants, food, and instructional materials.
