I am a Sixth Grade Literacy Workshop teacher in an under-resourced middle school in Brooklyn, NY. Each year, I am amazed by the number of students that come to me from elementary school not reading on grade level. The system has failed these children! Passing children on to the next grade, unable to read, again and again is unacceptable. The issue of illiteracy must be addressed, not ignored. The buck stops in my classroom. Getting struggling readers interested in reading is a challenge in and of itself. This challenge is multiplied at the middle school level because most of the texts my emerging readers can read are perceived as "baby books" - none of the kids want to be seen reading these books by their peers. So you can imagine my excitement when a group of my struggling boys discovered "The Secrets of Droon" and "The Zack Files" - two lower-grade series on their level that they actually wanted to read! I was overjoyed when they asked me for the next book in each series. Keeping struggling readers engaged is a difficult task. These books are a valuable tool that will support my teaching and push my young readers into more challenging texts. I am asking for funding of two copies of each of the remaining titles in these series. I teach because I make a difference. Will you please help make a difference in the reading lives of my students? Thank you.
