My students need these books so they can each have a copy to read, rather than having to share or wait for one to become available from my small classroom library.
My school is located in an economically depressed area in northwest Georgia. Most of my students are considered to be "free and reduced lunch" kids, and we are a Title One school. This has resulted in a real challenge on my part to make my classroom fun and my lessons engaging and exciting.
Social Studies should be an experience, not just another class to get through, and I'm so lucky to have kids who are curious and excited to learn about other places in their world, places they may never have the opportunity to visit.
I think they see that my class expands their horizons and opens their eyes to all of the things that COULD happen for them, and I want to be able to reward and encourage them in any way I can by bringing the experience of history and Social Studies to them personally.
We like to do service projects in my class to give back to our community. My students have donated money for war dogs, for our local K9 sheriff's deputy, and we're currently donating Legos to a community group in Havana, Cuba.
My Project
I have worked hard to create a small classroom library for my students. This little library, stocked with used books, is some of my students' favorite places in my room. Each book is written for young adults and focuses on some aspect of my social studies curriculum. Over time, I have noticed that two authors in particular are perennial favorites. This project will provide extra copies of three favorite books for more students to read, and could open the door to a smaller group book club for my more challenged readers.
Alan Gratz and Christina Diaz-Gonzalez are two of my students' absolute favorite authors and my kids beg to be the next person in line to read their books.
For my students, who don't generally enjoy reading, to argue about who GETS to read is a big deal and I want to encourage that spirit and budding love of reading!
By donating to this project, you're helping me to have multiple copies of this book so that every student who wants to read is able to have a copy for him or herself, and plenty of extras in case a book that's been taken home doesn't find its way back to the classroom.
