This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from many walks of life. The students I serve each day attend a Title I school in the highest poverty area in The Bronx, New York. They are faced with hardships almost daily; nevertheless, they show up, eager and ready to learn.
I am all for encouraging our students to work towards their goals, and I join right in by helping them with coping strategies to help keep them focused and making the right decisions.
This helps them academically and social-emotionally as well.
They are truly eager beavers, as well as a fun and diverse group of learners. I believe that small group work is a great way to provide academic intervention and reinforce their self-confidence.
My Project
My students often come to me with worries about grades, friendships, romantic relationships, home and family. I provide them with a listening ear and gentle guidance. These beading kits can keep their hands occupied while they are talking. It helps release tension and brings a smile to their faces.
Purposeful use of the hands in activities like beading and jewelry making can keep the mind in the present and free of worry about the past and the future.
Hand-based hobbies like these and others can help develop habits that include practicing, persevering, and trial-and-error problem solving, which are important life skills for everyone.
