This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the best students in the world! My school is located in a high-need community. Most of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. I have students from all different countries. My wonderful students come to school with a smile on their faces, ready to learn.
Although they struggle with extreme home situations, they often want someone to guide them into learning.
I enjoy coming to work each day and seeing their smiling faces. Some students' home lives are a bit more chaotic, which leads to a high transient rate. Quite a few of my students come from unstable homes, so the classroom needs to be the one constant in their life. They need to feel safe and provided for. Despite the many obstacles that surround them, they love to learn!
My Project
Scholastic News magazine subscriptions will give the students the text material they need to become informed about the world, specifically the good deeds that humans have done around the globe. Most of our students do not read at grade level, and it would be a precious gift to have access to well-written nonfiction material filled with current events. This material can provide the jumping off point for classroom debates, role playing, letter writing to government officials, as well as conversation points with their peers. In the end, we can have a more informed student body who cares about the real issues in our world.
With your support, you can help my students with not just reading but with science and social studies topics as well!
For children that may never leave the neighborhood or town they grew up in, this is a great opportunity. What a great way to also teach about acceptance at such a young age.
