My Students

Have you ever sat down for a long presentation? Imagine how difficult it would've been to sit through it in its entirety if you couldn't readjust yourself in your seat every few minutes. That's the challenge my students are currently facing--a rug, a learning space that is too small and crowded.

My students are a group of 12 Kindergarten students in a self-contained Special Education classroom.

They have a range of disabilities, including Speech and Language Impairments, Learning Disabilities, and Emotional Disturbance. Our school is a public school in a low-income area in New York City, and although teachers get reimbursed for some of their expenses, it is not nearly enough to buy all the materials we need. My students are just learning what school is all about and what it means to be a student. For some of them, this is their first school experience--the first time someone gets to foster in them a love of learning and shows them the potential that lies within them.

My Project

I'm requesting a larger, more comfortable rug for our classroom. In our classroom community, most of the teaching and learning happens on the rug in a whole group. With a larger learning space, students will be able to have their own space during learning time to sit comfortably and readjust themselves as necessary without disrupting their classmates. Aside from more room during learning time, a larger space will also make it easier for students to come up to the front of the group for hands-on participation without having to climb over their classmates. We frequently use our rug for movement breaks to help the children let out their energy and refocus themselves on the task at hand, and a larger space will allow us to move around more easily, without constantly bumping into one another. Lastly, this new rug would be useful because the squares will allow my students to sit in different ways (circle, rows, etc.) depending on the activity and will give them practice with their colors.

Any donations made for this request would be greatly appreciated and would make a huge difference in the lives of my students.

They will learn their alphabet, their numbers, how to read, how to write, and a number of other concepts on this rug. This is where they will get hands-on practice with new material as well as where they will share their comments and their questions. This first school experience will set the tone for the rest of their school careers; please help make it a good one!
