Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Study the science of art. Study the art of science," Leonardo Da Vinci.

Our Biology Engineering Arts Science Technology (BEAST) is a STEAM-powered Career and Technical Education (CTE) program in which students study art, biology, and physics through the lens of the film and theme park industries to innovate and create animatronics, machines that move like living creatures and other entertainment effects.

We are dedicated to empowering students through art and science to develop their own skills in innovation, creativity and collaboration in our two courses, Mechanical Arts Design Engineering (MADE) and Biological Arts Design Engineering (BADE) course.

Our student body ranges across many socioeconomic levels and cultural backgrounds (with many Title I and minority students). Their backgrounds vary widely from "high achieving" students who plan to move onto four-year colleges and universities (including Ivy League schools, film schools, and art schools) to other students who struggle with grades and work after school to help support their families. All our kids want to believe that they can have a future in the Arts and Sciences!

My Project

Help me give my students a hands-on special effects experience in learning the biology of skin and the effects of heat on it (burns) through the use of gelatin-based Special Effects (SFX) Makeup.

Burns are an essential part of any good makeup artists portfolio, and these materials are essential to building real-world anatomical knowledge and career technical skills.

The Farberware Microwave will allow us to rapidly heat gelatin to replicate burnt skin, and Medea WHD fridge will allow us to chill the gelatin to desired consistency for application, as well as store gelatin for future use. This process will allow our students to create the effects of severe 3rd degree burns and replicate the skin damage in a special effects manner.

The Agar provides students with a vegan option, and the PPI Skin illustrator will allow students to match and blend skin tones for themselves. Isopropyl Myristate is a cleaning produce for removal after these skin effect projects are complete.

Donating for these products will immensely enrich our students learning experience as they develop biological understanding of the dermal system and the accompanying skills and abilities of an artist within the field of special effects.
