My Students

Burn baby burn. The Bunsen burner is one of the most essential (and exciting) lab tools that students get to use in chemistry class. It is used to heat chemicals for reactions and to explore some of the fundamental concepts in chemistry like freezing and boiling points.

My students come from the great city of St.

Louis where the majority of our students are on free or reduced lunch. They attend a new charter school which calls itself college preparatory, but they have a long way to come. Many of our students are far behind in science, our scores on the state biology exam were nowhere close to where they need to be for our students to be ready for success in college. However, they are eager to learn and well aware of the fact that their laboratory experience is under supplied.

My Project

Who isn't captivated by fire? When a dollar bill goes up in flame only to remain intact, student's interest in the magic of science is perked. The same goes for the Bunsen burner. It is an extremely powerful, useful, and exciting tool to use. Without exposure to a bunsen burner, there's no way they can be ready for college. I've also requested microwells for micro experiments that are simple, but teach a concept just as effectively. Also there are glass stirring rods, these are for my 4th period who was the first class to turn in all their lab safety forms.

Last week one of the men who designed our new classrooms stopped by.

I asked him why we didn't have natural gas hookups for Bunsen burners, and his response was that it was a safety issue, that "these kids" can't be trusted. We are lying to our students if we call our school college preparatory, but then expect less from them because most of them are black kids from the city. Obtaining these materials is crucial for my students to be ready for college level lab work.
