Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 23 fantastic fourth graders in an inclusion classroom at a Title I school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Our school is truly a barrier free school, serving all students who come through our doors. Almost 10% of our students are English language learners and 33% are students with disabilities. Almost half of our students stay in after-school until after 5 PM each day while their parents work.
A crucial part of fourth grade is teaching students to think critically as they read fiction books.
"Just right" or leveled books are necessary for students to access these skills. My students' reading levels range from on grade level to below grade level. My students who read below grade level are in need of just-right books to practice and improve upon their reading skills.
My Project
In fourth grade, students make the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Students advance their thinking about characters by noticing how a character is complex and not just one way throughout the story. Students explore the relationships amongst characters, how characters act in different settings, and the real life issues characters deal with.
High-interest, low-level books give students reading below grade level an access point to practice these grade-level reading skills.
These books have complicated characters and deal with complex relationships. These books also address real life issues that are embedded in the author's message. It is through these books that I hope to engage students in reading and advance their critical thinking skills that are necessary for school and for life.
