My students are hard-working, committed student-athletes in the Five Points Neighborhood of Denver, CO. Our school serves a racially and economically diverse population and is continuing to strive for equitable opportunities for all of our students.
These girls made us all proud last year by showing their dedication to good sportsmanship as well as rigorous practices and a whirlwind volleyball season!
After every game- win or lose- our players were so excited to give a MVP award to one of our competitors (a player for the other team). Every one of our team members was willing to go above and beyond to make the logistics of practice and our games go as smoothly as possible. They continue to impress me with everything they are involved in and can accomplish by working together and being kind to others. Go Thunder!
My Project
During volleyball practice and games, our team is currently using handed-down volleyballs from the high school- many of which are bumpy and hard- and we have too few usable volleyballs for practice. We also use a difficult-to-manage bag to hold the volleyballs. The bag makes it hard for us to keep the balls organized and ready-to-use during practice. Often they end up half in the bag and half on the ground- which has been safety concern more than a few times.
I want to be able to run drills without having to worry about where the next volleyball is coming from.
I love coaching these girls. They are excited to learn new skills and practice them during our time together. Because of our second-rate equipment it has been difficult to keep our practices running at a fast-pace. Getting better at volleyball is not just about learning how to bump, set, spike- it is about repetition; touches on the ball! For our team to be competitive, we need equipment that will allow us the convenience and efficiency of having more volleyballs and a quick, safe place to keep them!
