Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how hard it was to stay away from a bully or to make the right choice and not join others in teasing a child. Well it has become much harder for our students to do the right thing and lead their own path.

I have 22 wonderful first grade students.

They are eager learners and come to school thriving on pleasing others. 98% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. My students come from a low income community and are faced with obstacles on a daily basis. They are excited to try new things and step out of their comfort zone.

My Project

I am trying to broaden the book selection in our classroom library. Our students do not get the opportunity to travel to a public library so the school is where they are mostly exposed to literature. My students need books such as Bullying in Schools, Edgar Allen Poe, Chicken Socks, a class set of Giant Children and a table to learn about bullying. My plan is to have students choose different genera's of literature and we would discuss what moral dilemmas were in the book and how they over come the problem. We would then discuss how that relates to our everyday lives. We would do this once a week through out the year so the students are always reminded of making right choices and being a leader in their actions.

It is important to expose our students to a variety of literature and help them relate to what they are reading. Bully can be stopped if we teach our students why it is wrong and how to handle real life situations. You can help make a difference in these children's lives.
