Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My students come from low-income families. Most are bilingual and receive free lunch. Many of the students are not able to go outside after school because they live in neighborhoods that are too dangerous. Their parents attempt to keep them safe by keeping them indoors so that their only release and activity comes from attending school. Even in the worst weather conditions, many of the students come to school to escape their homes, receive love and attention from the staff, and eat breakfast and lunch.

They face many obstacles in life, and school is their only source of freedom, expression and enjoyment. At school they are able to safely interact with adults and peers. They come from areas where there is little leadership and a community that does not take the time to know and raise them. With all these obstacles, these students still strive to receive good grades and awards for their accomplishments. They deserve opportunities like every other child but need help from others to do so.

For each semester we do large bulletin board assignments for Ms. Kyle's math class based on what topic we are on. For the next project, we are creating a fake Instagram page for the man who came up with the Pythagorium Theorem, Pythagorus. We are then graphing and discovering length of each side and the perimeter of the given shape. We want to color, decorate and staple our project up on the bulletin board. This project is a creative way to research the Pythagorium Theorem and incorporate the internet. This project is an opportunity to combine what we like with math!

In Their Own Words

With this project, we will be able to keep our supplies organized each time we decorate the bulletin board. We have a lot of art supplies and artistic students but, we need this project for the colored pencils to decorate our project, help organize our supplies, and staple our project to the bulletin board.

This project allows us to take charge of bulletin board! With these supplies we will be the designers of our own work. As students it is important that we are able to demonstrate our creativity and work together to showcase our artistic talents. It is important that we design so that we learn organization and teamwork.

If this project is funded, our community (staff, students and parents) will be able to witness our designs and artistic work. We will be able to show not only our mathematical skills but, our understanding of the internet and how to display our thoughts on a board just like an advertisement!
