Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have experienced a very narrow range of tools to help them learn to read. As a result, they often have a negative view of reading and very little desire to develop their reading skills. This mindset also holds back their overall development as students.

My students in general come from families of three or more children where both parents often work all day most days of the week.

Most of them live in government furnished housing located in the same lower income community that the school is. They are curious about the outside world and desire to have the same opportunities as other students in the district. The school itself has historically under-performed due to a lack of resources and unmotivated students.

My Project

The resources I have requested will help to create an environment in the classroom that is conducive to helping my students become better readers. It will be an inviting and well equipped area where they can more efficiently learn. Tools such as listening devices that they can read along with, telephones that read back to them how they sound when reading, and furnishings where they will be comfortable reading will all help create a fun place that they will want to go to read.

The bottom line is that better readers are better students.

I know first hand that these tools and methods work because it was how I learned to read. I would like for my students to have the same opportunities and resources that I did growing up. These things will help them become successful students and develop a passion for reading that will serve them for the rest of their lives.
