Help me give my students wooden blocks and accessories for a building center.
At our school district, the students, parents, teachers, and administrators have launched a Two-Way Dual Immersion Spanish program. Research has found these programs to be effective in developing academically strong, well-rounded students. Participating families are from diverse ethnic and language backgrounds who have joined together for the success of our students. The majority qualify for free or reduced lunch.
We are on our second group of Kindergarteners.
Our students and parents are highly motivated.
Our first scademic year we focused on developing a strong math and literacy program. We are now focusing on developing our STEM curriculum.
The families and students have committed to the program through 5th grade. When they graduate, they will be fluent speakers and writers in BOTH Spanish and English. To reach this goal, we want to build a strong foundation in Kindergarten.
My students like most kindergarteners are naturally curious. They are natural scientists who create, imagine, and collaborate. Implementing a block center in my classroom, will further develop their spatial skills, engineering principals, as well as build their language skills.
After attending a STEM conference, I realized how important a block center is for children to develop a plethora of academic and social skills.
I will implement a building center in the classroom to complement our science lesson. Our current unit is forces and motion so they will use the blocks to build ramps to explore what makes cars go faster. In the next unit of light and shadows, they will build animal homes to solve a problem of how to provide a shady home for their pet.
As they explore science and engineering concepts, they will also learn how to share and collaborate, how to negotiate with others and problem solve to achieve a goal. We can use their natural curiosities to build their science and math skills. A block center will allow them apply what we learn in our lessons.
