My students need an iPad that will enable them to build Word-of-the Day, "SHOWME" lessons that are used to build vocabulary throughout the school!

My Students

How do we build a working an academic vocabulary elementary in elementary aged learners? We teach them a new word everyday, using new tools available to us!

We are a school of over 400 students in rural, Northern Michigan.

Our students are eager learners and give it their best shot. Unfortunately they often come from impoverished environments that are language deficient. This means that words that we might think are common for children in a language rich home, are not a part of our student's working vocabulary. This does not dampen their spirits, but it does make building reading and writing skills that much more challenging!

My Project

Using the best technology has to offer we have developed a "Word-of-the-Day" Project. Through this project we teach a new word everyday school wide. This means students, write definitions for the words, teachers and students wear badges with the word, they earn rewards for using the word correctly. One of the biggest postponements of the program is students creating on line lessons defining the word and giving examples of the words usage. These lesson can only be created on line and posted using an iPad.

The Word of the Day initiative puts the learning and teaching of new words in the hands of the students.

They learn and write the definitions and they create the lessons. This is the best possible way we can find to build their vocabulary by giving them the confidence and power to use the words that they learn!
