Building Unlimited Minutes = Increasing Reading Stamina

My students need wireless headphones, books with CD's, and a mobile chart stand to work on building their reading stamina.

My Students

Can you run 2 miles in 10 minutes? I could not do it if someone was chasing me with a club! But can you walk 50 feet? Can you keep building up the length of the walk and increasing the speed a little each day? Of course you can! Students are the same with reading when they first start.

My students are just beginning their reading journey.

I can sit and read for hours but my students can only read for a few moments. We read every day but we have to start small to build up their reading stamina. Just as we cannot run 2 miles in 10 minutes the first time we lace up those tennis shoes, our children have to build up that reading time and comprehension skill. Our families are often working several jobs and do not always have the time to work on building reading stamina in the house. Language is also a barrier in nearly 35% of our homes. Parents would read to the children in their native language but our resources are only available in English. I can remember having the same problem trying to help my own children when they took foreign languages in school. This would allow the students to listen to stories or read along with them in class. It would also allow them to take books home to read with the CD in their homes as well.

My Project

Dr. Seuss said it best in "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut". He said, "The more you read, the more you know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go." That is the wish I have for my students. The more you read, the easier it becomes. The easier it becomes, the more the student will like it. My dream for my students is that they will learn to read successfully in first grade so that they will love it. Students at this age learn to read but by the end of the year they are reading to learn. I want this transition to be smooth. Empowering students to learn and empowering parents to help them makes our society stronger.

Books on CDs with headphones allow students to listen and eventually read independently.

Taking those CDs home so that there is more practice allows for a higher chance of success. Allowing parents to hear the books/CDs with the student increases parent/student interaction and improves parent participation. Reading together increases reading stamina, improves reading fluency, and augments reading comprehension. Our students need as many reading memories as possible.
