This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"You are the Architect of Your Own Future" is our theme. Students' future success is dependent on their ability to solve real world problems, think for themselves, and be resourceful, yet creative. Providing hands-on learning puts them on the road to success.

All of the schools in our area serve students from low income areas.

My classes are made up of the district's top ranking 2%- 3% of fourth and fifth graders. These students come from seven different elementary schools across the district. They may be impoverished financially, but they are full of life. They are lively and creative, funny, and clever. I see the potential these students have to lead full and successful lives. With the benefit of a good education, these students can be inventors, researchers, and leaders of the future.

My Project

During this course, students study architecture, but also learn about art, history, math, science, and engineering. Students will have an opportunity to show what they have learned by planning, designing, and building a structure. I have requested balsa wood building pieces in assorted sizes, building sticks, paint, cello sheets, pipe cleaners, and structure wire. These materials will be available to help students make their plans come alive.

According to a recent article in the Houston Chronicle, U.S.

students tested ranked 6th internationally in math and other subjects. It stated that other countries spend hours, as opposed to minutes, on problem solving each day. This is a strong argument for the type of hands-on learning that this project demands. Implementation of this "Extreme Building" project will help connect abstract concepts to real world problem solving.
