Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a room full of energetic, creative, curious and hard-working students. My students are English Language Learners, working diligently to learn to read, write and speak in English. At the same time, they are learning ALL first grade curriculum in their second language. My students are so eager to learn, they love science, they have developed a love for reading, and they are amazing at mental math challenges.
Learning through play is such an important concept at this age, the materials requested will allow the students the opportunity to communicate, collaborate and create with others!
It is such a pleasure to watch my students work together in a stress-free environment, They are learning, using their imaginations, language skills, they are creating, they are constructing, they are expressing, all while having a great time! Building their future, this is what first grade is all about.
My Project
The materials I am requesting are LEGO and DUPLO building blocks to add to our small classroom collection. The students enjoy exploring with building materials, creating designs, structures and being creative with the materials at hand. The students will have free exploration time with the materials. I will give them specific challenges during our math rotations, such as: build a house for a land animal, or build a house for an animal that lives in the ocean. They will also be challenged to construct the tallest structure possible with a limited number of building materials. With these new LEGO/DUPLO sets, the students will be able to create more structures for each challenge.
Although we are grateful for all of the donations, my students and I are most excited about the LEGO/DUPLO tech machine kit.
This kit will enhance the engineering component of our classroom STEAM lessons. We have always created machines with cardboard scraps and other materials and I will continue to do so. Using a kit in the classroom will be a new experience for the students,. These machines and their component may inspire students to create more complicated cardboard machines during our cardboard challenges.
Students are never to old to play, learn and create using LEGO. My first grade students will be partnering up with fourth grade students to work in cooperative groups on more advanced challenges. This will provide my first grade students the opportunity to learn from the older students and to develop relationships/mentorships with these students. I am looking forward to watching my students grow and develop as possible future engineers!
