My Students

Our school supports a large population of blue collar families. I teach and support specifically those students going into the construction industry. Our students form a diverse student body, with a large mix of Caucasian, Hispanic and African Americans. Most recently, we have had a large influx of students from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria hit their homes with devastation. Learning what these students have had to leave behind only makes me want to help more. Many of the students in my classes won't necessarily go on to college, but will enter the lucrative and competitive labor force. Exposing my students to as many real world experiences in construction will help them apply their learning in real world situations.

My Project

Tools are a necessary part of what we do! All of these tools, the reciprocating saw, measuring tapes, and levels are needed in our construction classroom. These tools will help each student learn basic measuring, leveling, and cutting. These tools are used in a variety of projects that students engage in on a daily basis. Some of the projects currently under construction include building a shed, a tiny house and fulfilling school improvement requests. Our students are learning how to layout and line athletic fields, build picnic tables, benches, and bookcases. With approval, students can initiate personalized building projects as well.
