I work in an fantastic community school with amazing students. We have over 50% English Language students and 100% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. Over 90% of my families are low income, yet despite that hardship students and parents come in with an amazing attitude and a willingness to learn.
My students are quiet, shy and incredibly gifted.
Yet many of them do not have basic technology in their home. As a school we started a program where students built computers from spare parts and gave them to our families. Now almost all of our families have technology at home. It is now time to start expanding their technology skills in the classroom as well.
I am putting together a classroom that focuses on technology integration. I want to ensure that my students have the best opportunity to succeed in their very tough environment. My students are up to the challenge.
My Project
3D printing is being used in almost every manufacturing sector and our kids need to be ready! Prior to 3D printing technology, students rarely got to design a product and hold it in their hand. Today, it is now possible for students to see and hold their creation. Instead of bringing drawings home to hang on the fridge, students can now bring home projects they created from beginning and put it on their shelf.
We are requesting a 3D printer which is a great teaching tool that will increase student engagement.
Students using technology help them stay engaged in the lesson much longer than without. The Department of Education found that 3D printers had a highly motivational effect on pupils and most schools who used 3D printers had a greater interest in STEM subjects.
It is important that students are equipped at a young age to use technology in order equip them for their careers in the future. What if the next engineering genius is sitting in my classroom and does not have access to this technology.
