This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Perhaps the quintessential high school biology experience is the frog dissection! Today, the push is to not spend time doing dissections because it's not tested on the state standardized tests. This year, we won't be able to dissect the frog for the first time.

I have been teaching high school honors biology for 13 years in a high poverty urban school.

Our school is majority minority with 90% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Most of our students do not speak English at home. Still, we maintain a large cohort of honors science kids with excellent science teaching. Our honors students are sometimes the first people in their family to graduate high school and even with the odds stacked against them, almost all of them graduate from colleges, many from ivy league schools. Many pursue advanced degrees. My own students have gone to become research biologists, wildlife biologists, doctors, dentists and biology teachers. Many tell me that I was their inspiration, which of course, makes me want to continue our school's tradition of excellent biology instruction including the bullfrog dissection.

My Project

I keep in contact with our graduates and they always remember fondly the bullfrog dissection. This is sometimes the culminating moment of the school year and the time when some realize that natural science is their passion. I want to keep that spark alive by allowing them to continue dissection the bullfrog each and every year. I need help this year because our school will not be able to purchase these specimens. I need 50 plain, preserved bullfrogs to allow my students to have this experience.

The students in my school district don't complete required dissections in the lower grades.

My students are 9th graders and this will be their only opportunity to do a dissection as it is the only biology class they will take in high school where dissecting a frog is aligned to the curriculum. Without this experience in my classroom they will miss out on the high school frog dissection and the learning that comes from that experience.
