I have been teaching high school honors biology for 13 years in a high poverty urban school. Our school is majority minority with 90% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Most of our students do not speak English at home. Still, we maintain a large cohort of honors science kids with excellent science teaching. Our honors students are sometimes the first people in their family to graduate high school and even with the odds stacked against them, almost all of them graduate from colleges, many from ivy league schools. Many pursue advanced degrees. My own students have gone to become research biologists, wildlife biologists, doctors, dentists and biology teachers. Many tell me that I was their inspiration, which of course, makes me want to continue our school's tradition of excellent biology instruction including the bullfrog dissection.
