My Students

My students are full of heart and hope. I want to inspire them to find their voices and also to provide resources for them to be able to deal with the challenges they face in life.

Most of my students are ethnically diverse, inner-city students in Los Angeles.

70% of them are bussed to my school and travel long and far to get a quality education. I want to do the best I can and inspire them through creativity and expression. I want them to view our curriculum as connected to their lives and for them to see their capacity to fully speak their truth and tell their stories. As we study a unit on the environment, I want them to see the history and context of their own environments and stories.

My Project

I want to bring the program Say Word into my classroom. Say Word empowers young people to express themselves and improve literacy through spoken word inside the classroom and out. Say Word's curriculum is aligned with California Core Curriculum standards and is partnered in high school classrooms of under-serviced communities. Say Word's goal is to provide students with tools to document the history of their own lives while providing a safe space that encourages young writers to grow. This program believes in the importance of young people speaking for themselves. Its mission includes 2 district goals that embody this belief: 1. Nurture free expression by empowering young people with the essential tools of self-expression so they are better equipped to tell their own stories, present their own lives, and share their opinions with a purpose; and 2.Provide safe spaces which encourage young writers to grow into future leaders with the ability to use their voice for self-improvement.

I hope to provide this rich and powerful program to my students.

It can make all the difference for my ninth grade students and help to teach for the planet and better student learning environments. The curriculum students have access to can determine their success in school. I want students to be inspired to shape their destinies and futures. I hope you will consider supporting this project and helping build student voice and expression. Thank you!
