My Students

Teaching gifted students from grades K-8 provides lots of challenges for me as teacher. Imagine STEM instruction in this Title I classroom where students are always excited about learning!

With technology and science innovations developing so quickly, each day is an exciting journey that my students and I take together.

Whether learning to use google docs and slides, practicing our programming skills, or researching science topics, there is some new discovery to be made almost hourly.

When the older students watch the younger deftly entering their user names and passwords, turning on voice typing, or navigating through a block programming course, even they remark, "Where will these little guys be when they're our age?"

My Project

When Chromebook technology first arrived at our Title I public school two years ago, we knew they offered great promise for our students. Less than one-third of our students have home internet access, making the learning of applied technology skills in school even more for future academic success. But with a ratio of eight students for every one Chromebook, it is still challenge to help all students develop the foundations for tech skills that will connect them to future learning and careers.

With Chromebooks, my students are using google docs and slides to collaborate on STEM research and writing projects.

they learn the basics of coding and programming through code.org and "scratch" developed by MIT. They learn to use the Internet efficiently and effectively, to become more critical , tech-savvy consumers of information. Teaching grades K-8 (in separate age groups) daily, it is not surprising that upper grade students have taken to Chromebook technology, recognizing it for the tool that it is.

What has been a surprise is the way in which our K-2 students have become so quickly proficient. With only a couple class periods of practice, our 1st graders now enter their own logins, access their google doc projects, and go to voice typing to record their work! The barrier created by having to slowly hunt-and-peck to put their words on paper has been removed. Conversely, seeing the printed word appear as they speak has sparked enthusiasm in non-readers, motivating them to develop written language skills.

Currently the number of primary students in our gifted program has ballooned to more than 30 students. These Chromebooks will be a huge help in developing written language skills for these young learners.
