Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fourth grade in Redwood City, CA. Hoover is a Title 1 school located in a low income area. More than 95% of the students are second language learners. Many of these students are below grade level in all areas, and we enjoy the challenge and reward of bringing them up to grade level.
One main goal each school year is to build literacy skills. Many of our students do not have books at home and only read books that they take home from their classroom. In order to become better readers students need to read more. An exciting, fun filled classroom library filled with books at all levels is key ingredient to success.
This project aims to build the existing classroom library. New exciting and interesting titles must be purchased that encourages students to read at their level. What better way to turn a kid into a real reader than by having a beautiful selection of books that are interesting and exciting?
Appropriate books will be purchased in a variety of genres and levels. Approximately 30 students will benefit every year from this project and the books will be cared for and used for many years to come.
Most of our students enter fourth grade reading below level. Our goal is to bring every student to at least grade level or beyond. Success in the lower grades allows students to enter junior high with the skills and knowledge to do well and become successful students and adults. Please help support these students!
