Building Reading Comprehension with 3D Printing

Help me give my students a 3D printer and materials to build reading comprehension in a fun way!

Mrs. Graham Envision Science Academy
Wake Forest, NC Grades 3-5

My Project

Lets make reading comprehension fun!

Using a 3D printer to enhance reading comprehension for 3rd graders can be a fun and engaging way to connect hands-on learning with literacy.

Here are a few ways we can integrate 3D printing into reading lessons:

1. Create Story Elements

Design Characters: After reading a story, students can design and print characters from the book. This allows them to visualize the characters and better understand their roles in the story.

Setting and Scenes: Students can 3D print key settings or scenes from the book, reinforcing their understanding of where and when the story takes place.

2. Build Vocabulary Understanding

Create Objects Related to Vocabulary Words: For challenging vocabulary words, students can print objects that represent those words.

Word Matching: Students can print words or small objects and match them to definitions or story elements. This tactile activity makes vocabulary learning interactive.

3. Comprehension through Retelling

3D Printed Story Retelling Kits: After reading, students can create 3D models of important elements of the story (characters, objects, etc.) and use these to retell the story, helping them focus on key events and details.

Scene Sequencing: Students can print objects or symbols representing different parts of the story and use them to sequence events, helping reinforce their understanding of the story structure.

4. Encourage Creative Writing

Print Writing Prompts: Use the 3D printer to create unique objects or scenes that serve as writing prompts. Students can write stories based on the objects they’ve printed, enhancing both their comprehension and their creative thinking skills.

5. Visualization of Abstract Concepts

For abstract themes or concepts (like emotions or metaphors), students can print symbols or models to represent these ideas, which can help deepen their understanding of the text.
