My Students

The library media center is integral to student learning at our Middle School. Many of our students come into the media center to receive academic support, gain access to books and materials they do not have at home, and to use computers to complete and print assignments. My school services underprivileged students grades 6-8. Students come from a working class background with more than half the student population on reduced-price or free lunch. The media center gives them a place to experience something that can only add to their academic learning.

The library media center is a place where we learn about acceptance, open our mind to new ideas, and learn from the mistakes of our past.

Through our book club, we read and develop a new appreciation for great literature and what it has to teach us about ourselves and as humans. Every book we read is given to the students to keep. Providing a personal copy expands readership as students share with families and friends and continue to promote the power of reading and the capacity to grow as readers.

My Project

Research has shown that reading reduces stress from anywhere between 50 to 60%. In a time where we are seeing students' stress levels rise steadily, reading maybe one way to help combat the emotional stresses that we are seeing in students. Additionally the topics in these books are positive messages to our youth and can help students relate to their own personal lives. Reading also gives them a break from being online. Let's build readers and give back the stability our students need through good reading and self inspiring books
