My Students

I have 45 students in Kindergarten and First grade on a half-day basis. The class population is 60% English native speakers and 40% Spanish native speakers.

It is a very creative and diverse group that during the two years they have been in school, they have learned to work based on respect, friendship, teamwork, responsibility and commitment.

My future Kindergarten students were my students last year when they were in Pre K3. They are enthusiastic about being able to learn Spanish but they need support since most of them do not speak this language at home. They like Spanish and are motivated by learning. They help each other to learn something new each day and help each other not to give up.

My Project

One of the things that help students learn a second language is exposure to books because while they read they see pictures that help them understand what they are reading. As a bilingual teacher, my students come to me with very limited exposure in Spanish and I need to expose them to the language using a variety of materials.

Acquiring the habit of reading in childhood means that the child will be a future reader.

In addition, children's books are a fantastic vehicle for their education as they develop their imagination and bring a cultural value to their education.

My project requires a selection of books in Spanish appropriate to their age, levels and interests.

I am sure that with these materials students will be more motivated to use the books and have access to them. Having access to books of their interests and appropriate to their ages is going to encourage them to read and little by little get the habit of reading. In addition, they will benefit as they improve their vocabulary, comprehension and fluency in Spanish. Time constraints make it very difficult to find the appropriate books for everyday activities.

Your help will motivate my students to read more books and develop their language skills. Moreover, your help will allow us to organize our collection of books.
