Our school was devastated by Hurricane Harvey after it dumped 60 inches of water on our small community. In an instant, our students' lives were changed when they lost their school, and many of them lost their homes as well. Currently, the campus is split, with the 5th-grade students being housed in portable buildings at the high school.
Hurricane Harvey might have drowned our school, but it did not drown my students' desire to read and learn.
Our library and classroom teachers lost almost all of their books. With over 60% of our student population considered low income, school is the only place for some of them to get access to quality reading materials.
My Project
Classroom libraries are an important resource for our 5th grade students. Not having our own campus, their access to the school library is limited. Having well-stocked classroom libraries gives them daily access to a variety of texts.
Reading makes a difference in the lives of children everywhere.
Research shows that academic achievement is linked to leisure reading. Students need a choice in what they are going to read. This collection of fiction and non-fiction books will give them more variety to choose from. What better way for students to start a year of learning and growth than with expanded classroom libraries?
