These kits will allow me to begin to build a Makerspace for students to use in the library. Hurricane Harvey took so much from my students, and I want to help give them back a place where they can learn and explore. These tools will provide a necessary outlet for students, fueling engagement, creativity and curiosity at the same time. They will be able to learn coding and develop new skills. The electronic building blocks snap together with magnets empowering kids to create inventions. Our 6th graders participate in an invention fair each year, and this is a great way to get their minds working. Students will be able to build and create before school and during study hall. Teachers will also be able to bring groups of students to the library to work hands on using the STEAM kits. Giving low-income students access to new technology is an investment in their future. It is imperative that students have hand-on experiences with technology. This will allow them to grow and thrive as 21st century learners and exercise critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication.
