My students need relatable stories with inspiring characters in both English and in Spanish. Help my students become passionate readers who learn and grow from the stories and lessons of characters who share their hardships.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are young developing readers who struggle to find the right book. They laugh, cry and gasp alongside me during read alouds, but when it becomes their turn they complain that they don't have any books as good as that one. And they are right...I have invested hundreds of dollars over the last few years as a new teacher, but I still have only accumulated a hundred or so good reads. The students begin the year excited and rushing to the library, but after the first two months they have run out of books at their levels and of their interest.
This is their 6th year in a bilingual program and they are looking for funny, adventurous, and inspirational books in both English in Spanish that will captivate them and teach them about life.
Unfortunately, many students do not have a reading life outside of the classroom because our school and local library are very limited, especially for Spanish texts and young adolescent books. Our library has hundreds of early literacy books and a collection of upper middle school novels, but somehow the books for 3-5th graders are missing! My students need novels that will captivate them all year.
My Project
These additions to my classroom library will allow my students to see themselves in the books that they are reading, in both languages they communicate, think and dream in. My students have experienced so much trauma at such young ages and are looking for others who understand them, examples to follow, and inspiration to persevere. From topics of immigration, cultural assimilation, poverty, bullying, loss and disabilities, these carefully selected books will captivate, teach and empower my students to have self-confidence and express their feelings.
Please help me captivate my students with books directly related to their lives, hardships and wonders.
Help them learn about other first generation immigrant experiences and turmoils alongside Maria Isabel, Naomi Leon and Amina. Show them that it is never too late to fix your mistakes and start over with Restart. Support them to process their own grief and depression while reading Where the Red Fern Grows and Out of my Mind. My students will learn so much from the stories of others while developing a love for reading and empathy for the unknown stories of those around them.
