These additions to my classroom library will allow my students to see themselves in the books that they are reading, in both languages they communicate, think and dream in. My students have experienced so much trauma at such young ages and are looking for others who understand them, examples to follow, and inspiration to persevere. From topics of immigration, cultural assimilation, poverty, bullying, loss and disabilities, these carefully selected books will captivate, teach and empower my students to have self-confidence and express their feelings. Please help me captivate my students with books directly related to their lives, hardships and wonders. Help them learn about other first generation immigrant experiences and turmoils alongside Maria Isabel, Naomi Leon and Amina. Show them that it is never too late to fix your mistakes and start over with Restart. Support them to process their own grief and depression while reading Where the Red Fern Grows and Out of my Mind. My students will learn so much from the stories of others while developing a love for reading and empathy for the unknown stories of those around them.
