Help me give my students LEGO bricks they can use to build multicultural and diverse communities.
This project expired on November 23, 2019.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
My students are between the ages of 3 and 5. They are energetic, adventurous and curious. Their joy is genuine and their laughter is contagious. They are at a precious and very critical age. Their experience in preschool will impact how they feel about school for the rest of their lives.
I work for a program in which 90% of the families we service are from low-income households and many have been exposed to some form of childhood trauma.
We know through research that these early years are the most crucial years for brain development and learning. This is why It is so important to me to provide my students with fun and engaging learning experiences that will help build and strengthen both cognitive and social-emotional skills.
The materials requested will be used to help children explore the world and its diverse cultures as well as introduce classmates to their world, and all through play.
Wouldn't it be nice to build the perfect world?
With these LEGO materials, my students will be able to do just that. To a preschooler, their world is only as big as the environment around them. The only culture they know, is their own. It is so important for them to share their cultures with others, but to also learn about the cultures of others. The children will be able to use the LEGO kits to build homes and communities. They will be able to use the animals of the world to pretend to visit other countries. They can identify with the LEGO world people by finding one that matches their skin color. They can pretend to be any of the community helpers that they choose to be, despite race or gender. The community helper set will show them that a girl can be a firefighter and a boy can be a teacher.
Please help me give my students these LEGO materials so that they can "build" a diverse world bigger than the one they have been exposed to.
