My Project

At our middle school, our Functional Academics classroom is home to 11 incredible students who bring a unique mix of personalities, strengths, and dreams for their futures. They are driven, hardworking, and full of joy, and it is truly a privilege to be their teacher. Every day, we work to create meaningful learning experiences that help our students grow academically, socially, and functionally while building confidence and independence.

One of the most impactful supports for our students is participation in motor labs.

Motor labs provide structured opportunities for students to strengthen coordination, balance, and body awareness through hands-on movement activities. These experiences help improve both fine and gross motor skills, which directly support everyday tasks such as writing, cutting, participating in PE, and navigating the school environment safely and independently. Beyond physical development, motor labs also support sensory regulation and emotional growth by giving students positive ways to move their bodies, stay engaged, and build readiness for learning. Students practice important life skills such as following directions, taking turns, problem-solving, and working cooperatively with peers. For many of our students, these activities build confidence, reduce frustration, and create meaningful connections between movement, academics, and functional life skills.
