Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a mix of 4th and 5th graders in a self-contained special education class. This class consists of currently but will cap out at 18.
Some of these children have a variety of disabilities mostly consisting of dyslexia and other language based challenges.
My students are unique and special because they show grit and determination when dealing with any challenges that arise.
There are a number of students who were illiterate when they joined my class. However, due to their hard work they have become independent readers and are thriving.
My Project
These materials will make an immediate and significant impact in my students' learning. In order for students to be literate they need both decoding skills and language comprehension. The materials selected are all language based and will allow them to expand their background knowledge and increase vocabulary skills. Students will utilize resources both at school and at home depending on the specific materials.
Literacy and quality of life are closely connected and students who develop those skills early on can change the trajectory of their lives.
Additionally, those who struggle with reading are much more likely to have social/emotional challenges and not even finish high school. In summary, you have to be literate to navigate real life dynamics.
