This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love that my students love to explore and build using almost any material within their reach. So many of my students have not had the opportunity to build freely, or just be a kid and play with constructive materials or toys. I teach in a high-poverty city with many of my students being English Language Learners. Because of this, they have not had the resources to be able to experience creativity like this.

By affording my students this opportunity, they will be able to design, engineer, and construct bridges, buildings, and countless other structures by using the Keva Planks.

One of our state standards is engineering processes. A big part of that is critical thinking. When students are able to deconstruct a problem, fix the issue, and then reconstruct a better version, we are affording them the opportunity to think on their own. If what they reconstruct doesn't work then they can start the process again. We are teaching them to have perseverance, which is a vital life skill.
