Help me give my students books of all different levels to fit their reading abilities and interests and will build our classroom library and get kids excited about reading.
I teach a classroom of 26 lively second-grade students. Our district is in rural southern Ohio. Most of the students have families that are either part of the farming community or know someone who is. Approximately 65 percent of my classroom is on free or reduced lunch. All the students in our school receive free breakfast daily. For many of my students, school is the best place for them to be... they are loved, get nutrition and have a safe, clean environment in which to learn.
The students and their families have a strong sense of community with our school.
With the school being a common ground for so many families, the district has reached out in many ways to help struggling families' needs.
My students are all hard-working kids who love to learn. The students have a large range in their abilities.
My Project
These books will be put in our classroom library and will be labeled in the Accelerated Reader program. Students know their reading levels and will be able to choose books to read during our Daily 5 reading block. The books selected are at various reading levels to fit the needs of all the learners in my classroom.
Organizing the books by reading levels helps the students make their selections and being a library inside the classroom gives me opportunities to discuss and suggest what they are choosing.
Our classroom library is a source of pride and we work together to keep it organized.
