Building Our Home Libraries: Part 2

My students need high quality texts to help build their libraries at home!

My Students

Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least 6 different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.

At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.

Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.

I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.

My Project

My students love books! We have built up a huge and interesting classroom library that my students absolutely devour. They read every single day and they have access to tons of high quality texts to support their reading development.

One of the greatest difficulties facing my students is their lack of access to books at home.

I created this project to request a variety of books that students will be able to keep all for themselves! The books cover several fiction topics that include some fairly tales as well as more realistic fiction. I want to make sure my students can be engaged readers regardless of whether they are in the classroom or at home. Please help me to expand the libraries of all my students!
