This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in my school are from a variety of family backgrounds. They do not have a huge amount of opportunity to experience different types of things for a number of reasons. I strive to give them reasons to stay out of trouble, have new and different experiences and believe that they can be more than athletes and nurses to be successful.
I started an extra curricular activities committee because we had very little for the students to look forward to.
I also acquired a class pet through a pets in the classroom grant from Petco and have encouraged other teachers to do the same.
My Project
During our PSSA standardized testing I do a project with my students called Geometrocity. We use this to release the testing tension and destress after daily high stakes testing. The students do not view it as educational even though it is. I call it edutainment, because they remain entertained while being educated. After we complete the paper portion of the project last year we built the city we made from cardboard boxes that were given to us. But I would like to use something reusable this year so I can make this an annual event. My students were so proud of what they made last year that we invited the entire school in to see what we made!
