Help me give my students access to STEAM materials, books dealing with contemporary social issues, and build our classroom library with award-winning books. Access to these texts will help build background knowledge and grow as readers and learners.
My students are an amazingly diverse group of 24. We are comprised of English Language Learners from Mexico, Central, and South America, Africa, Iran, and Afghanistan. We are located in close proximity to several military installations including Marine Corps Base Quantico and Fort Belvoir, and I have several students who are dependents of active duty military personnel.
Along with cultural and ethnic diversity, we also have a neurodiverse group of kids.
We have some SPED friends who spend time with us during social studies and science. A number of us are ADD or ADHD kids who benefit from engaging ways to learn and from flexible seating options that will help use cope with our high energy level.
Our two greatest academic challenges this year will be increasing our multiplication fact fluency and improving on reading comprehension and stamina. We are part of a STEM focused school and do our best to integrate projects and experiments to make learning come alive!
These books will enhance our print-rich classroom and allow my students to learn and practice reading comprehension strategies every day during independent reading. These books will help them build the metacognitive skills necessary to transition from learning to reading to reading to learn and prepare them to become more independent as they transition to middle school.
I want to provide these kids with books that will ignite their curiosity!
We need more books! My students only get to visit the library once every six school days, so our classroom library is of utmost importance to their learning!
This project will help immensely with ensuring the success of my students as they learn the reading strategies that will set them up for success for year-end testing and prepare them for fifth grade and beyond.
