Building Our Classroom Library

Help me give my students a classroom library of books that inspire them and grow their love for reading.

My Students

6th grade is such an exciting group of mixed interests and goals. My students are into reading all sorts of different genres such as fantasy, science fiction, realistic fiction, historical fiction, mystery, thriller. They peruse books about a wide range of nonfiction topics as well from one of the girls who loves to crochet to my jocks in the room who love sports books.

In my classroom community, we are risk-takers who branch outside of our comfort zone and open up to new ideas and challenges.

This includes varying our reading material and being open to read about ideas and concepts that are different from our own. Thus, students are able to be more tolerant, empathetic people by reading about the different stories and experiences of others as well as exercise critical thinking skills about what they read.

Our school community has its primary emphasis and focus on literacy such that it is integrated all across the curriculum. Students are challenged to sharpen their reading, writing, and speaking skills to be able to compete and succeed in a world where literacy is an essential skill, empowering them to voice their opinions and stand for what they believe in.

My Project

These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy-I read on the carpet to them, they complete work there, and they read independently! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind-trying to find books that have diverse characters every student can relate to. Some of the books will also be used to connect with science and history content that they will be learning in the classroom. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.

With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.

They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading.
