My students come from low-income households with aspirations of one-day becoming coders, website designers, robot builders, or graphic designers. This is the first year in 3 years that they have had a technology teacher on campus. Most of my students are behind in understanding how to use technology in an educational aspect. My students are thrilled to finally be learning technology to the depths of what they can do with it. This is the first year that they have a technology program being developed around their needs and desires.
Their eyes light up when they get the chance to learn new technology resources.
They are able to see that this could be a future for them to go into. They see that there is potential to explore different resources even if they don't have the money to do so at home.
My Project
My students want to learn how to make 3D objects. They have made some models in Tynker Cad, and if they could be printed would bring learning full circle. They understand how difficult it is to create an object, but they don't get the reward of seeing their work finished. The 3D printer and filament will allow my students to create 3D model animals, puzzles, objects, and more. They will also be making "Maker Coins" for lower class-men, students who are showing their Husky Pride, and as a way to help fundraise for our technology program!
3D printing will allow my students to have more pride in their work, pride in their school, and work towards being a positive student at school.
Allowing the students to showcase their 3D builds during their Special Showcase will show their parents their hard work and problem solving skills. They will get to take their 3D printed object home at the end of the quarter to showcase them working through a challenge!
