This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work at a Title I school in Milwaukee, WI. Most of my students come from disadvantaged neighborhoods and it is my job to give them a quality education. As this is their first experience with school I try to smoothly bridge the gap between their home life and new school life. My students have adjusted very well to my structured and engaging classroom. I take pride in the fact that my students enjoy coming to school. Working closely with parents, I encourage my class to come to school everyday although this is a struggle for some.
My students have a vast curiosity for learning that I continue to foster using diverse learning experiences.
For half of the school day, the children are working, creating, exploring and sharing their learning with their classmates. This means that I, the teacher, take time to listen to the children learning with each other and aide the students in questioning their learning and discoveries. My students have grown their vocabulary (an area in need of growth) and language development due to the rich discourse they participate in daily!
My Project
My students have exhausted the counting resources available at my school. These materials will give them additional "hands-on" counting experiences. While utilizing all of the moving pieces in these resources they will have opportunities to refine their fine motor skills (pinching, grabbing, etc.).
While engaging in the counting games, the students will also be able to converse with their peers, explaining how they are counting, building up their math language skills.
K4 students that are given rich encompassing experiences will make more gains academically. My students will use these counting games during morning work time as well as during a rotational math workstation lesson.
