This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember learning to count? Or learning to add? Most people don't! But these skills are a very important part of life.
My students live in the inner city. Their school was formerly one of the lowest performing schools in Maryland. Over the past three years, they have made tremendous progress. As a teacher, I want to keep that positive momentum going. My students love learning, and they need hands-on tools and appropriate texts to do so.
My Project
The resources that I am requesting are materials and texts that will be used in developing number sense. My students will be able to use the beads and pipe cleaners to build number bracelets for addition and subtraction. Myself and the students will be able to read the math stories to teach and reinforce math concepts. As we work with larger numbers, the place value disks will be a pictorial representation.
The students in my school have made significant gains in literacy. The math fluency scores remain low. Number sense is the foundation for understanding numbers and is essential for fluency in math. The tools in this project will be utilized by students to gain concrete knowledge of numbers, both big and small.
