Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember trying to learn math? It is a very difficult subject to learn without manipulatives to help you visualize the process. How about learning to understand mathematical word problems with out the basic skills to learn how.
I have 27 students in my class who are enthusiastic and eager to learn every day.
They live in a very high poverty area where about 95% of students are on free and reduced lunch. Most of the students are Hispanic and come from homes where they might be the only one in their family to speak English. Our classroom lacks many essential resources that will allow the students to have a more authentic learning experience.
My Project
Learning math is a very difficult process for many students. With many students today being visual learners, learning the various mathematical processes is very difficult when they are only able to hear the process and not see it. By having manipulatives in the classroom, students will be able to see and show how their math problems are solved. By being able to physically see and manipulate their work, they will be able to gain a better understanding of the various processes. By having a wide variety of manipulatives, we will be able to use them throughout the entire school year. We are also in need of items that students will be able to use for math centers. This includes real world mathematical problem solving. Students will be solving real world math problems for the rest of their lives and by starting them early they will be able to comprehend the reasoning much quicker.
Understanding and being able to apply mathematical reasoning is something that will last a child through their lifetime.
Math is used every day in almost all areas of life and for a child to gain the skills needed, they will be able to have a much more productive life.
