My Students
In first grade, learning is doing. I work in a brand-new STEM school in Utah teaching 30 wiggly, enthusiastic 6-year-old students. Student learning gains from direct instruction pale in comparison to those gained through engaging, kinesthetic, collaborative learning tasks.
My classroom is a place where learning is loud, hands-on, student-centered, and rewarding.
Students spend much of their day in small groups working on interactive educational tasks to both learn and teach concepts to one another. It is a place where students are excited to come to school each day and discover and learn through fun, purposeful activities.
My Project
My students need materials so they can build their literacy skills.
Words need to be more than letters on a page; rather, they need to be letters that students can manipulate, build, illustrate, and write in various forms so they can make meaningful, lasting learning connections.
Students' faces will light up as they build words with ETA hand2mind Plastic Lowercase Letter Tiles stored in Primary Concepts, Inc Letter Tile Organizer Containers. They will also have opportunities to stamp words into a variety of colors of Play-Doh (Modeling Compound 36-Pack Case of Colors, 3-Ounce Cans), using the Lowercase Alphabet Dough Stampers. Alphabet Stamps - Lowercase, dipped into the Giant Kid-Safe Stamp Pad to spell words, and Didax Educational Resources CVC Unifix Letter Cubes will also give additional practice for students to spell words in fun, meaningful ways.
I want to give my students fun centers and intervention activities. They will do this by using the Learning Resources Word for Word Phonics Game, the Didax Unifix Reading Phonics Kit, the Stack & Build Simple Words, Building Words Instant Learning Center, and the Junior Learning Spelligator Board .
The other part of my project focuses on giving students meaningful writing practice. Students will be more engaged with their tasks if they have exciting materials to practice with. I want to give them practice with expo markers and wipe pockets (Low Odor Chisel Point Dry Erase Markers, Reusable Write & Wipe Pockets), large paper (Post-it Super Sticky Easel Pads), and alternative writing materials (Crayola 50ct Twistables Colored Pencils, Mr. Sketch Assorted Scent Markers 12 Pack, and Stencils Letters Uppercase Lower Case Craft Set).
I can't wait to see the work these students produce and the learning gains they will make through accessing and practicing content knowledge in exciting, meaningful ways!
