This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help us improve our reading skills through the arts! Our school knows that every child learns differently, and is making a strong effort to integrate literacy into every subject. We need a dance library where students may research and build literacy through the arts.
My students are very energetic.
They have great ideas, though they do not all have the family support they need to learn appropriate boundaries. They live in New York City, and attend a school that serves to teach respectful boundaries while stressing academic excellence. My students love to move, and the movement-based opportunities provided by the school help them focus better both in and out of the classroom. Many of my students are English Language Learners working to improve both written and verbal language skills.
My Project
With the materials requested, my students will have a library of resources where they may both research and read for fun. We will be able to do projects on the history and evolution of dance, study individual choreographers and contributors to dance, and spark ideas for careers related to the arts for students who love to move. They will be able to speak knowledgeably about different dance genres, and appreciate the contribution dance has made to the music and pop culture with which they are familiar.
With these materials, my students will have the opportunity to improve literacy by having books available on a subject that holds their interest. I will also be able, as their teacher, to create literacy-based dance lessons integrating books and movement for multi-intelligence learning.
This project is of key importance as it will be the first step into establishing a dance library in our school.
I hope to make dance a means for inspiring students to read and write, think critically, and to crave information. These materials will enable my students to begin what I hope is a lifelong journey of becoming informed about topics that interest them.
