Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each day, our TK class rotates through various learning centers. At this point, our 24 students are sharing 5 IPads to access technology. TK curriculum encourages learning letters and sounds, as well as a few sight words to develop early literacy. IPads will allow independent progress and data
Our TK classroom is a multi-cultural melting pot, with students being primarily Hispanic.
They are energetic and enthusiastic four year old learners. We have students that speak everything from Farsi, Spanish, Portuguese, Croatian, to English. Crestwood has six special education classrooms on our campus, and all of our special education students are mainstreamed in to general education. Currently, I have 4 students with disabilities that our part of our TK learning group. We welcome and encourage all learners here!
Our school has seen a recent influx of English Language Learners, and we are adjusting our curriculum and teaching strategies to meet their needs. In our classroom, we are lacking the technology necessary for many students to utilize individualized programs that track and record their learning progress. Our students are eager to come to school each day and excited to be a part of our Crestwood learning community.
My Project
By having an IPad mini, it will provide the opportunity for one additional student to have access to learning support programs that track their individual progress. The programs that we utilize, use a scaffolding approach to build and increase their individual abilities. I would like to focus primarily on Literacy programs that develop early literacy skills. Our school goal is to have every Kindergarten student reading by the time they exit Kinder. With teacher instruction, partnered with individualized tracking, we can assess and address the various levels of success. Our students will build from letter identification, to letter/sound correlation, to blending sounds, recognizing sight words, to ultimate fluency.
By having just one more IPad available to my students, it will allow additional time and support for our literacy learners.
Instead of having five students able to access learning software and programs, we will have six students at time. This means increased feedback for me, as their teacher, to provide individualized learning that increases their potential. The students absolutely love the applications and programs, and one additional IPad means additional time learning at their own pace.
