Building Lifelong Lovers of Reading...One Book at a Time
My students need access to a variety of books in order to compete in our annual book competition as well to strengthen their independent reading mastery.
Our Title I public school aims to provide students with a quality education that transforms students into life-long learners, critical thinkers, and influential members of society. Our students are constantly challenged with thinking outside of their comfort zone and putting their community first. While our school is able to provide various activities for students to practice leadership skills, it is very important that I also provide my students with a library of books that open up their minds to more than just what they see around them.
Our students are compassionate, aware of their world around them, and want to make a difference in society.
They are already developing their leadership skills in their classrooms. As a reading teacher, I understand the power of putting books into the hands of students. Even though the socioeconomic status of our school does not look like that of a private school, our students are enthusiastic about their learning inside and outside of the classroom. Their desire to learn and use their knowledge to transform the world around them is inspiring.
My Project
The selection of books I have chosen serve multiple purposes for my students. This particular selection of books will be used to prepare our middle school Battle of the Books team for competition in the spring. However, these books reach our students beyond this academic club. This selection of books provides students with a variety of genres, mediums, and reading levels.
With this set of books, students will be able to confidently select books that they will be interested in, that meet their individual reading needs, and that they'll want to share with their peers.
There is truly nothing more exciting than watching a student become emotionally invested in a book. Having students come up to me and tell me about a journey they just went on or a character they really connected to is what makes being a teacher so rewarding. By giving students the substantial and diverse selection of books they deserve, I am able to reach them and grow them as readers and instill in them a passion for reading that will carry them through the rest of their lives.
