Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come to a school that is 100% free lunch. This becomes their new home as they are exposed to so many opportunities here, they do not get elsewhere. Many come from homes with multiple languages and have limited English support. Yet, my students still have a love for learning. They are accustomed to things in life being difficult, but it is because of this, I find that they have a lot of grit. They have a deep love for learning and want to do well in school. It would be an honor if I could provide my students with everything they need to thrive as model students and citizens in our society.
As I go into my 5th year of teaching first grade, I have seen my students thrive throughout our academic standards, social conversations, and in exposure to the world around us.
However, in this time of chaos, most of my students have limited resources and materials at home to utilize for their learning. They are desperate for engaging activities to develop their literacy, sound relationships, and phonemic awareness.
My Project
This year has been particularly challenging as many students were at home during the early part of our pandemic. This experience was not as structured as it is in a normal academic year. Most students who came to my class still struggled with letter-sound recognition and phonemic awareness. Pairing this with being a Title I school, many students being bilingual, has made learning English this year a challenge. I have been creative in making activities for my students to receive additional support in letter recognition to develop their reading ability.
Since my students absolutely love using manipulatives and playing games, I am asking for a few types of alphabet letters and some letter/sound games to enhance their understanding of sound relationships.
My students will use these magnetic letters in hands-on activities in the classroom to develop their reading skills! Each child will be able to have a set for themselves to use when we do letter/sound relationships, rhyming, spelling words, and phonics activities in groups and as a whole class. By having a set to themselves, they will be following safety protocols and my students will develop a feeling of independence as they actively engage in working on creating words. The tactile experience they receive handling these letters and engaging in the games will allow for multiple modalities to be reached!
